Si bien el 5G no puede cubrir todos los casos de uso porque no tiene una cobertura del 100% y porque muchos dispositivos IoT tienen un gran condicionamiento de consumo eléctrico y de capacidad, ya se han desarrollado tecnologías móviles para IoT, denominadas Mobile IoT, que son redes seguras gestionadas por operadores de telecomunicaciones. Esto hace que aplicaciones que con 4G no podían abordarse, puedan hacerlo ahora con el 5G, como por ejemplo, soportar la enorme cantidad de datos que generarán las ciudades inteligentes o los vehículos autónomos para interactuar de manera segura entre sí con la infraestructura de tráfico.
De esta manera, el 5G y las Mobile IoT están desempeñando un papel mutuamente complementario para lograr la Internet de las cosas, por lo que hay tres mercados destacados donde su combinación será más pronunciada en el futuro: los hogares inteligentes, los servicios públicos y la IoT industrial.
Además, se estima que, a finales de esta década, se llegará a los 10 mil millones de objetos conectados, es decir, unos 1.400 objetos IoT por persona. Lo que significa la reducción de costos en dispositivos de radio para conectar equipos, como pueden ser los autos conectados, los robots, los contenedores de embarque, los campos agrícolas y los sistemas de tráfico.
